I started sailing over 20 years ago when I moved to Bournemouth for work. I had recently come out of the army and had never tried boating but thought I would give it a try as I now lived so close to the sea. I did a 5 day RYA Competent Crew sailing course and I have been hooked on boating ever since. Like all hobbies, there is always more to do and learn so I trained through the sailing scheme and became a Yachtmaster (sail).
I eventually quit my job in IT to take a year off and work out what to do next. During that year I became a dinghy instructor and a powerboat instructor. I also bought a RIB and started running rides for tourists from Poole Quay.
Following on from that I qualified as a Yachtmaster for motor and became a Yachtmaster Instructor for both power and sail as well as an advanced powerboat instructor.
These qualifications have taken me all over the world. I’ve taught sailors in Oman how to navigate. I’ve sailed to Africa. I’ve been all over the Mediterranean and run charters in Greece, Ibiza, Mallorca, Croatia and lots of other places.
I’ve taught people to sail and drive boats from all sorts of backgrounds. I’ve worked with leisure boaters, border force, specialist police units and lifeboat crews.
I’m keen to share my knowledge and experience with our members and help them progress as far as they want.
I spent time as a soldier when I was a kid. I also spent years teaching people how to sail. These kinds of close knit environments where teamwork is important foster a spirit of camaraderie and teach you the skills required to unite people to a common task.
I’ve had three careers in my life so far. Telecom Tech in the Royal Signals, Director of an IT company and Principal of a Powerboat School and Boat Club. I always seem to seek the next challenge and pursue it until it has taught me all it can.
In my spare time I like to venture out for adventure. I travel and I have been to a number of places between the Arctic Circle and Africa. I also like to read when I get the chance and practice magic tricks in my spare time. You have to have a hobby!
